The search for a new lens…

Het is weer zover, de zoektocht naar een nieuwe lens is gestart. Weeral, want ik kocht mijn twee lenzen in februari pas aan. Nu droom ik van een 24-70mm of een 70-200mm. Al zal deze laatste nog lang een droom blijven en hoop ik die eerste in de komende jaren in mijn armen te sluiten. Nu ik de kriebel van concertfotografie echt te pakken heb is het tijd om het wapenarsenaal uit te breiden. Maar eerst moet ik het volledig onder de knie hebben en het beste uit mijn primelens halen. Het lukt al aardig, maar het kan nog beter.

Ik heb er nu drie concerten opzitten en zal van elk concert 1 foto posten om mijn vooruitgang te tonen. Op dit moment zitten er geen concerten meer aan te komen, eerst is het tijd voor mijn studie. Jammer genoeg. Maar ik hang de camera aan de haak na 1 mei. Dat wil zeggen dat alle posts die er dan nog volgen posts gaan zijn over oudere foto’s of over mijn dromen en reviews maar dus geen nieuw materiaal meer.

Niet getreurd na 16 juni ga ik weer volop aan de slag.

The search for a new lens has started. Again, because I bought my two lenses in February. Now, I dream of a 24-70 mm or a 70-200 mm. Although the last one will stay a dream for a very long time. I hope to close the first one in my arms in the next few years. Now that I really like concert photography it’s time to expand my weapon arsenal. But first I need to fully know what I’m doing and get the best out of my prime lens. It’s going nicely but there is room for improvement.

I’ve done three concerts and I will post a photo of each concert so that you can see my progress. At this moment there’s nothing planned in the future, but that’s ok because it is time to study now. Unfortunately but I will hang my camera on the hook after the first of May. This means that all the next posts will be posts about older photos or about my dreams and review. But for this time, no new material.

Don't worry after 16^th of June I'm going back to work.

Rock Ittervoort

Vorige week vrijdag 1 april, ja ja haha, was het Rock Ittervoort. Een klein festivalletje in Nederland. Het deed me een beetje denken aan Meensel-Blues, ongeveer van hetzelfde kaliber alleen was dit progressieve rock. Een stroming waar ik al vaak iets over had gehoord, want mijn papa is een fervent luisteraar. Maar nu heb ik er van mogen proeven en het smaakt naar meer. Ik kan de echte muziek nog steeds het meest appreciëren. Ik heb het niet voor de hedendaagse muziek die met behulp van een computer wordt wat hij is. Maar goed we dwalen af. Een week voordien kreeg ik de vraag van Jaak Geebelen of ik die dag zijn assistent niet wou zijn. Na een fractie van een seconde getwijfeld te hebben ben ik daarna vrolijk de trap opgespurt om het tegen papa te zeggen, om daarna een bevestigend mailtje terug te sturen. Ja, ik wil bijleren! Een week tevoren had papa mij in contact gebracht met Jaak, ik was direct weg van zijn foto’s. Hij vroeg me of ik hem wou assisteren tijdens een paar bandshoots en vervolgens mocht ik het concert fotograferen.

Een ervaring om nooit meer te vergeten. Achteraf gezien heb ik veel bijgeleerd over mij en over mijn camera, over wat ik wil en wat ik kan. Het heeft zeker en vast een paar deuren geopend waar ik het bestaan anders niet van af wist.

Waar ik een maand geleden nog zei, ik wil geen concertfotografe worden zeg ik nu, ja graag. Maar het is nog een beetje willen en niet kunnen. Een 35mm primelens is een fantastische uitvinding maar niet uitermate geschikt voor concerten. Ik mis een zoom. Ik mis een ezel die geld * J

Terug on topic, de bandshoots waren leuk! Maar mijn Engels trekt op niet veel als ik het moet spreken. Het was allemaal down to earth, heel rustige lieve mensen. En grappig, vooral dat.

Ik ga niet dieper ingaan op de groepen, maar ze zijn de moeite waard. En als ze nog eens in de buurt komen, dan sta ik er weer.

Last week, the first of April, Yes I know, haha J, it was Rock Ittervoort, A small festival in the Netherlands. It reminded me a little bit of Meensel-Blues, just as small and cosy. Only this is a progressive rock festival. A flow of music I have often heard of but don’t know a lot about. Although my dad I an avid listener. Now that I’ve heard the performances I want more. I think I like progressive rock, but I like everything that is real. But we wander off.

Two weeks before Rock Ittervoort my dad showed me some pictures of Jaak Geebelen a friend of his. He did concert photography and I really liked his pictures, so I send him a message to ask what sort of lenses he used and things like that. Later that week I got a new message from him. He asked me if I wanted to be his assistant at Rock Ittervoort. After doubted a fraction of a second I ran up the stairs to tell my dad the good news. As my dad is always pushing me, but that’s not a bad thing J. Sometimes I need that little push. I send a confirmatory email. Yes, I want to learn!

What followed were interesting conversations, band shoots, and overall a very nice, unforgettable experience.  It has definitely opened some doors for me. I’ve learned a lot about my camera and about myself.

And a month ago, were I said, no I don’t want to be a concert photographer I say now, Yes please!  But it’s still I want, but I can’t. A 35mm prime lens is a fantastic invention, but not very suitable for concerts. I miss a zoom! I need more money! I need a donkey who * money J

Oh well back on topic, the band shoots were really nice, but my English. Oh my, I can write it very well, but speaking, that’s something else. But the band members were all very nice people, really down to earth. And funny, that too. If you like to see the photos of the band shoots, than go to Jaak Geebelen his Facebookpage.

Here are some pictures that I have taken with my Nikon D3000 and 35mm f1.8. I’m not going to talk about the bands, all I have to say is, they are truly amazing! And if I ever have the chance to see them again, I will be there.

Meensel Blues and first time shooting concerts

Vorige week zaterdag 12 maart was het Meensel Blues. Mijn papa zat mee in de organisatie en daarom vond ik dit een uitgerekende kans om een concert vanop de eerste rij te fotograferen. Ik wist nog absoluut niets af van fotograferen in minder verlichte plaatsen.

 Op de site www.froknowsphoto.com vond ik de informatie die ik nodig had om aan het eind van deze avond mooie foto’s te hebben.  Speciaal voor dit evenement kocht ik mij een 35mm f1.8 lens, hier volgt nog een review van. Deze lens is uitstekend geschikt voor in donkerdere plaatsen te gebruiken alsook voor portretten. Goeie lens voor een kleine prijs en als student en beginnend amateur fotograaf is dat alles wat je nodig hebt. Ze bewees haar diensten heel goed die avond alleen jammer dat ik niet kon inzoomen.

Ook voelde ik me lichtjes geïntimideerd door de fotografen die wel grote zoomlenzen bij hadden. Ik verdween dus ook snel weer op de achtergrond. Maar na de tweede groep veranderde dit opeens, ze vroegen mij of ik mijn foto’s na verloop wou doorsturen en dat gaf me zo een boost van zelfvertrouwen dat ik de rest van de avond voor en naast het podium bleef plakken. Jammer genoeg heb ik van die groep niet zoveel goede foto’s maar al bij al was het een zeer geslaagde avond. Ik heb veel geleerd.

The Blues Believers

Last week, the 12^th of March it was Meensel Blues. A little blues festival in my neighbourhood. My dad was involved in the organisation of it and so I found this a great opportunity to photograph a concert from the first row. I knew absolutely nothing about shooting pictures in low light situations.

On the site www.froknowsphoto.com I found all the information I needed to have beautiful pictures at the end of the evening. Specially for this occasion I bought the 35mm f1.8 lens from Nikkor. I will be reviewing it in the future. This lens is ideal to use for low light situations and also for portraits. It’s a good lens for a small price, so as a student and amateur photographer that’s all I need. It proved its capabilities well, it’s only a slight pity that I couldn’t zoom.

Also I felt slightly intimidated by the photographers who had big zoom lenses. So I disappeared quickly in the background. But after the second group it changed suddenly, they asked me whether I wanted to send them my photos and that gave me such a boost of self-confidence that I stayed near the stage for the rest of the evening.  Unfortunately I don’t have many good photos of that group but overall it was a successful evening and I’ve learned so much.
