What is this?

Hallo,
Hello,

(for the English readers)

Do you remember that day that the moon was bigger than normal? I thought, let me take a picture of it. But I couldn’t reach the moon. I also thought she wasn’t bigger, just brighter. So I decided to take some pictures of the stars. To be able to take pictures at night with my kit lens I need to open my aperture for three seconds. Yes three whole seconds! Don’t worry, this time I used a tripod. But then this appeared on my photo. What is it? I don’t know.

The love of my life

Hallo,
Hello,

(for the English readers)

Today I’m going to tell you about something that only had a little bit to do with photography but more about ‘Who the * is Katrien?’

Katrien is a girl who has a great love for flowers. I love to stick my nose in them and sniff and smile. Yes flowers are my drug. I have loved flowers as long as I can remember or not remember because I was so young.

When I was six years old, I fell in love with multiple guys at the same time. I love Hanson and still do. You know the boys with the long hair. I still listen to the old songs, because I don’t know any recent ones.

I also love animals, a lot. I love tigers. I don’t know how that came but I find them powerful and beautiful. But I also love owls and parrots. Why? No idea, why do you love the things you love?

Even before I knew how to drive a car I already knew which one I wanted. I want to have a Volkswagen T2 in frog green with flowers on the back in the form of half a moon just above the rear wheel.

I love long walks and bare feet. I love long walks on bare feet.

Oh I also like photography, duh! Of all kinds, that reminds me where is my roll of film? Oh yeah, I also love chaos. I’m chaotic J And I love poems, I love writing poems, on the edge of a pond in a forest.

And from the love for flowers came the love for body lotion. Yes, I’m hooked. I have more than, euhm… I can ever finish. I like the smell of it. I like to smell. But only the things that smell good. No dirty thoughts!

I also like the 1970’s. I was born too late, no in real life even a month too early. But I love hippies. I love their clothing, their carefree lifestyle, their freedom. I’m totally peace dude. I’m wearing my peace sign for over seven years now. Non stop.

I love stones. Stones, gems and minerals. I have about 300 different species. I’ve known them all, but I forgot. I still look at them and think, damn mother nature, you are my hero!

I love my friends, especially those who are already there since the nursery class, but also the fantastic people who I’ve met recently.

I love my student life, although it may  now end. I say now! I don't like studying L, but studying and student life are going hand in hand.

I like to talk. I like being around people, but I also like being alone.

And sometimes I like to be a little strange. A little different than all those other people. If everyone is black, I want to be orange.

And lately I also love of singing. Yes Katrien loves singing. I can’t keep a note and I sing more horrible than a cat. But still I like to sing.

So this is me in a nutshell. Just to summarize. I love nature and everything it has to offer, I love music, and other creativity. I'm a little strange, or so they say. But actually I’m just being myself and nobody else.

Tot de volgende keer!

Rock Ittervoort

Hallo,
Hello,

Terug on topic, de bandshoots waren leuk! Het was allemaal down to earth, heel rustige lieve mensen.

(for the English Readers)

Last week, the first of April, Yes I know, haha J, it was Rock Ittervoort, A small festival in the Netherlands. It reminded me a little bit of Meensel-Blues, just as small and cosy. Only this is a progressive rock festival. A flow of music I have often heard of but don’t know a lot about. Although my dad I an avid listener. Now that I’ve heard the performances I want more. I think I like progressive rock, but I like everything that is real. But we wander off.

Two weeks before Rock Ittervoort my dad showed me some pictures of Jaak Geebelen a friend of his. He did concert photography and I really liked his pictures, so I send him a message to ask what sort of lenses he used and things like that. Later that week I got a new message from him. He asked me if I wanted to be his assistant at Rock Ittervoort. After doubted a fraction of a second I ran up the stairs to tell my dad the good news. As my dad is always pushing me, but that’s not a bad thing J. Sometimes I need that little push. I send a confirmatory email. Yes, I want to learn!

What followed were interesting conversations, band shoots, and overall a very nice, unforgettable experience.  It has definitely opened some doors for me. I’ve learned a lot about my camera and about myself.

And a month ago, were I said, no I don’t want to be a concert photographer I say now, Yes please!  But it’s still I want, but I can’t. A 35mm prime lens is a fantastic invention, but not very suitable for concerts. I miss a zoom! I need more money! I need a donkey who * money J

Oh well back on topic, the band shoots were really nice, but my English. Oh my, I can write it very well, but speaking, that’s something else. But the band members were all very nice people, really down to earth. And funny, that too. If you like to see the photos of the band shoots, than go to Jaak Geebelen his Facebookpage.

Here are some pictures that I have taken with my Nikon D3000 and 35mm f1.8. I’m not going to talk about the bands, all I have to say is, they are truly amazing! And if I ever have the chance to see them again, I will be there.

My equipment

Hallo,
Hello,

Maximale sluitertijd 1/4000sec
3 frames per seconde
Jpeg of RAW of beide
3 inch lcd scherm
Li-Ion batterij
Gewicht body alleen 485 gram
Geen video

Ben ik tevreden? JA. Punten? 8/10

(for the English readers)

In the following months I will describe all my equipment. Per article I tell you about 1 product. So let me start with my camera, because that’s what it’s all about.

On the 23rd July 2010, I bought a Nikon D3000, were it not that I had put my mind on a Canon EOS 1000D. Luckily or not? But he was sold out and it could take a while before he was available again. As impatient as I am I had to go home with a reflex camera that day. We drove to another shop, also there was Canon sold out but the seller was kind enough to show me a similar model of Nikon. I was sold, flung all my money on the table and drove home with a Nikon D3000 and a 18-55 mm kit lens with stabilizer! Wow, because I needed that, while I’m nervous and exited and always shaking J .

Now after eight months I'm still very happy with the best purchase of my life. I learn more and more every single day, but secretly I’m already dreaming about a Nikon D7000. But this will be for within a year or three, maybe four. I first would like to invest in good lenses and then upgrade to a better body. But actually, the body is not so important and it's all about the ‘glass'.

Some features of this camera in a row:
10,75 megapixel
Small frame camera
Uses SD and SDHC cards
Up to a maximum of Iso 3200 (but not recommend)
Maximum shutter speed 1/4000sec
3 frames per second
Jpeg or RAW or both
3 inch lcd screen
Li-ion battery
Weight 485 gram body only,
No video,

I am pleased? YES. Points? 8/10

Next time I tell something more about the kit lens.

Some of my very first pictures

Hallo,
Hello,

(for the English readers)

Today I will show you some of my first pictures taken with my Nikon D3000. Those are taken with my 18-55mm kit lens.

When I now look back at that time, I had too leave that kit lens behind much earlier. It’s a good lens, there’s no doubt about that but your options are limited. But then again, in the beginning I didn’t really thought about camera settings or the correct composition. If I saw something I wanted to photograph, it was just point and shoot. I found it hard to look trough the viewfinder because I had been using my Fuji Finepix A920 for three years in a row.

I had to adapt a little bit that I had to look through the viewfinder and not been able to see everything on my screen. When I saw what I wanted to see it was just click and the photo was ready. Settings? No, the camera did everything by itself.

For a long time I wasn’t concerned about exposure, shutter speed and aperture. I didn’t knew what it was and what it did. But fortunately I grow up in a time that the internet is hot. Since the last three months I’m really learning about all the technical aspects, and that shows in my photos. Although I take more pictures to get that one shot right, I finally use my brain before I shoot.

Random picture

Hallo,
Hello,

Laat me weten wat jij ervan vindt.

(for the English readers)

I took this picture during a balloon flight in September 2010. It’s actually part of a bigger picture, but I personally like the smaller one more because now the sun is the subject in this picture that’s drawing all your attention. In the bigger picture the gap in the clouds is the subject that’s drawing you attention. But that’s my opinion.

Let me know what you think.

Finally spring!

Hallo,
Hello,
